Okawahara Senshoku Honpo

Although the origins of Kagawa's traditional craft, Sanuki Nori Dyeing is lost to history, there were many dye shops in the castle town of Konya-machi, surrounding Takamatsu Castle. Mainly, peasants' working clothes and kimono were dyed with indigo dye. Over the years the number of dye shops in this area has dwindled. However, still continuing the indigo dyeing traditions handed down throughout the generations, this shop has been in business for more than 200 years.

Currently, the artisan dyers incorporate new techniques while preserving the traditional glue dying techniques to make noren shop curtains, banners, flags, shrine curtains, happi, lion dance yutan, and more. Unique to the region, the Sanuki lion dance and udon are local cultural specialties. This culture has protected and nurtured the best glue-dyeing techniques as they form the basis for making local lion dance yutan and noren shop curtains for udon restaurants. Maintaining tradition while making quality products with reliable techniques may seem simple, but it is difficult and very rewarding job.
